4 cups all-purpose flour1/2 cup granulated sugar1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast1 cup lukewarm milk1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted1/2 teaspoon salt2 large eggs
For the filling:
Your favorite jam or fruit preserves
For the topping:
1/4 cup unsalted butter, meltedPowdered sugar for dusting
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in lukewarm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough back in the bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions, forming small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Flatten each ball in your hand and place a teaspoon of your favorite jam or fruit preserves in the center. Seal the edges and place the filled dough balls in the prepared baking dish, seam side down.Brush the tops of the Buchteln with melted butter. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.Once out of the oven, brush the tops again with melted butter and let them cool slightly.Dust the Buchteln with powdered sugar before serving.
